Many benefits to nurturing an allotment

The benefits of having an allotment are being extolled in Peterborough in recognition of legislation that is 100 years old this year.

The act established a century ago means anyone who wants an allotment has the right to ask one of their local authority.

With less food miles and peace of mind knowing that what you get on your plate is both organic and additive-free, it is easy to see why growing vegetables in greenhouses, allotments and gardens is becoming increasingly popular.

Nick King, community engagement officer for Peterborough city council, said: "Its the food, the fresh air, the people that are on the sites.

"You make friends and pull each others legs. Theres a good bit of banter and friendship on there, its a good place to be," she told Peterborough Today.

In related news, Ware town council currently has over 50 people waiting for allotments in its area, with a waiting list of up to two months, according the Hertfordshire Mercury."ADNFCR-1495-ID-18562978-ADNFCR"
