Be careful of sun exposure, Brits warned

Those who spend a lot of time in the garden and greenhouse may wish to pay attention to recent advice on exposure to the sun.

Overexposure to rays can damage any skin type and should be avoided, it has been claimed.

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) said clearer information should be available on how to avoid sunburn and added certain groups may benefit from taking heed.

Speaking about research by Kings College London showing skin cancer is on the increase in the UK, BAD spokesperson Rebecca Freeman warned people the message of sun protection was an important one.

"Certain people are at higher risk of melanoma and sun safety messages have not always explained this very clearly, but have instead targeted the population as a whole rather than those at most risk," she explained.

The study found the number of moles a person has can be the best indicator of their susceptibility to skin cancer.

It also showed there has been a noticeable rise in melanoma instances over the past three decades.

As people are likely to spend a lot of time outdoors, garden and greenhouse growers may benefit from educating themselves on sun protection."ADNFCR-1495-ID-19278716-ADNFCR"
